Somnia Anesthesia partnered with nurses and physicians at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, New York to study peri-operative care of surgical patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The Capital District Nursing Research Alliance awarded the study team with a poster presentation on the topic at the Alliance’s next conference.
The presentation, entitled Perioperative Management of Patients with Suspected Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): Preventing Respiratory Complications in the High Risk Surgical Patient, will be displayed on April 27, 2011 at the 7th Annual Capital District Research Alliance Conference. An all day program of scholarly activities is scheduled at New York State Nurses Association in Latham, New York.
Poster Showcases Study
The poster is a tri-fold table top display and depicts the work of Somnia and St. Mary’s clinical staff on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the peri-operative setting. It starts by identifying the problem associated with a patient with OSA and the potential health risks.
The purpose of the study was to implement a protocol for managing surgical patients identified as high risk candidates for OSA. The poster illustrates the methods used for developing the protocol and study and offers the conclusions drawn from the study.
Attendees at the conference will have access to the study’s data, as well as the High Risk OSA Decision Flow diagram.
