The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) recently recognized Somnia Anesthesia with national distinction as a Patient Safety Organization (PSO).

Somnia is the first anesthesia-only management company to receive this honor. It is one of only 81 organizations in the country participating in the voluntary, nationwide program to improve patient care here.

PSOs also are designed to aggregate data across multiple health care provider groups, which will help identify issues quickly and reduce risk and improve quality. As de-identified data become available from PSOs, a Network of Patient Safety Databases will receive, analyze, and report trend data nationally which will be included in AHRQ’s annual National Healthcare Quality Report.

PSO

The PSO classification emerged from The Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 (Patient Safety Act) as a means for improving quality and safety for health care.

Organizations listed by AHRQ as PSOs must demonstrate activities that support those initiatives. The staff of a designated PSO must possess analytical and problem-solving skills for identifying and creating solutions that prevent patient safety risks and hazards.

The acknowledgement as a PSO by AHRQ validates Somnia’s ongoing commitment to quality and patient safety through its Clinical Quality Excellence Program and its strategic partnerships with its clients.

For more information about PSOs or to review the list of organizations, go to AHRQ’s dedicated site for PSOs.
