An informal survey of patients about to undergo a procedure in an ambulatory environment might find their responses suggest a certain comfort level. Why, they have an expectation that they’ll be in and out, same day. Indeed, past studies have concluded that perioperative times were significantly shorter in freestanding ASCs than in hospital-based ASC1.

As technology and anesthetic development continue advancing, patient experiences are even more enhanced and greater efficiencies are achieved, the odds increase that demand will grow (and costs may shrink). At the same time, the opportunity for anesthesiologists to drive more positive change in the ambulatory setting broadens. How? By guiding the delivery of smarter anesthesia at ambulatory surgery centers.
