Matoon’s beginnings are attributed to the construction of the Illinois Central and the Terre Haute (Indiana) & Alton Railroad project that met in the town. If you’re a history buff who also likes outdoor activities and is picky about your bagels, you can rest assured that Matoon easily checks those boxes.
Matoon offers residents a variety of housing options, from classic and newly built homes to condos to apartments. Whether you chose a more peaceful rural setting or prefer to be in the city, you will enjoy easy access of Matoon’s wide array of amenities.
Mattoon offers a bevy of can’t-miss things to do, from attending special events, to getting involved in the arts and learning about local history; to dining at independent restaurants and staying active at area parks. It is home to the historic Time Theater, which opened its doors in 1911 as the K Theater, burned down in 1937 and rebuilt in late-Art Deco style and now serves as a venue for concerts and other special events.
Parks, lakes, orchards, golf courses keep residents and visitors busy year-round. Matoon’s Douglas-Hart Nature Center sits on a 65-acre site and is home to a restored tallgrass prairie, a 12-acre wetland, a woodland area with more than 60 native tree species and miles of winding trails and observation stations.
Round is the sports shape of choice in Matoon, which is recognized as the “baseball capital of the United States” and offers plenty of opportunities to play golf and tennis. Recreation abounds in and around this city.
