Somnia’s Hugh Morgan Presents Concept of Accountable Anesthesia Organization at Johns Hopkins University

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – June 13, 2013 – Hugh Morgan, Somnia Anesthesia’s vice president of quality assurance, recently presented to the anesthesia residents and faculty of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine on the heightened responsibility anesthesia providers will have in the new accountable care era.

Laurie J. Antonik, MD, MBA, the Division Chief of Anesthesia Outreach and Clinical Associates at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine requested Mr. Morgan to speak about the Accountable Anesthesia Organization concept created by Somnia Anesthesia. Mr. Morgan’s “Role of an Accountable Anesthesia Organization in the U.S. Health Care Industry” presentation was a thought-provoking lecture that covered the historical and economic development of the U.S. healthcare industry, the macro and micro impact on the economy, the need for ongoing health reform, and the overall impact on the specialty of anesthesia.

After providing background on the factors that have led to an overhaul in the U.S. healthcare system, Mr. Morgan focus shifted to the impact felt upon the anesthesia specialty. Among his recommendations, Mr. Morgan suggested that anesthesia providers should approach their clinical practice asking two overarching questions: (1) What if it were my loved one? and (2) What if it were my money?

Several years ago, Mr. Morgan developed the concept of an Accountable Anesthesia Organization for Somnia Anesthesia. Expanding upon his idea, he suggested that, “An Accountable Anesthesia Organization is one that embraces a just culture of safe, patient-centric, and quality focused medicine that is always resource-efficient and cost-effective as it relates to the goods and services provided.”

Concluding his presentation, Mr. Morgan stated that “anesthesia practices who are accountable to the patients and organizations they serve will no doubt successfully weather the storm of health reform uncertainty as it relates to increasing service demands and shrinking reimbursements.  They will have transparently demonstrated their value and ROI to the organizations they serve and as such, will be afforded the security of true partnership with other successful healthcare organizations.”
