This is the first in a series of white papers designed to explore issues germane to hospitals struggling to control anesthesia subsidies. While market conditions may not drive subsidies down, or cause them to disappear entirely, understanding their etiology may provide facilities a lens through which to view them and offer perspective. The series is especially valuable for those who are concerned with qualitative, quantitative and/or financial aspects of ORs, anesthesia services or other contingent services.

What are some anesthesia trends/advances you're seeing in the ASC setting? Lagging marketplace perception concerning the non-congruency between ASC and anesthesia financials. ASC facility fees almost always dwarf anesthesia professional fees. As a result, a surgery center may turn a profit for a given operating room surgical volume on a given day but this volume may not provide ample compensation to support an anesthesiologist working for market rates.
