No hospital executive wants to choose between finding additional funds for anesthesia services and reducing the number of surgeries at the facility. However, that is what many of today's anesthesia staffing models force executives to do. How serious is the problem? The Advisory Board Company reports nearly half of all hospitals temporarily closed operating rooms (ORs) due to the lack of anesthesia coverage. A tight market makes it exceedingly difficult to find additional funds, and reducing surgeries hurts the bottom line. Industry trends, such as staffing shortages and a rise in performance-based payment systems, add to the hospital's ongoing challenges.

The survival of today's hospitals depends on how well management balances the financial, administrative and quality performance of their staff. One method for achieving a positive return on investment (ROI) is to establish the hospital's operating room (OR) as a center of excellence. Effective management of anesthesia services plays a pivotal role in achieving excellence in the OR. This white paper examines what drives value in the OR and how focusing on clinical quality excellence in anesthesia services is an effective technique for maximizing OR efficiencies.

This is the first in a series of white papers designed to explore issues germane to hospitals struggling to control anesthesia subsidies. While market conditions may not drive subsidies down, or cause them to disappear entirely, understanding their etiology may provide facilities a lens through which to view them and offer perspective. The series is especially valuable for those who are concerned with qualitative, quantitative and/or financial aspects of ORs, anesthesia services or other contingent services.
