In early summer, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the UC Irvine Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care held their Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) Summit at which the topics of population health, patient satisfaction, and the per person cost for quality care (collectively, the Triple Aim) held center stage. As healthcare’s payment systems change, becoming more value based, and mirroring, somewhat, the models followed by other business sectors, enhanced patient experiences and high quality care at lower costs will be the new normal.
Given their role in perioperative surgical care and working closely with OR managers, anesthesiologists are perfectly positioned to drive implementation of the PSH model in hospitals and surgery centers. As we see it, there are five building blocks for successful perioperative anesthesia partnerships.
